Seasonal differences in the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in an overexploited shelf sea ecosystem

چکیده

Abstract Aim Biodiversity loss results in reduced ecosystem functioning. However, the relationship between biodiversity and functioning (the BEF relationship) overexploited ecosystems remains controversial largely because of lack validation nature. Therefore, this study, through four seasonal trawl surveys demersal fish assemblages off shelf sea Shandong Province, China, we explored relationships their variability. Furthermore, assessed relative importance environment on biomass variations. Location Shelf China. Methods At each station, calculated taxonomic functional diversity indices, examined association with based index. Moreover, index's two environmental variables, bottom temperature surface chlorophyll‐ a concentration, to investigate conditions explaining changes Results Two indices (species richness variance) (functional evenness) were significantly associated at least one season. not consistent among seasons, highlighting need consider season‐specific (e.g., evenness). Specifically, despite consistently significant seasons for species richness, variance, noted temporally variable evenness. Both produced strong synergistic effect biomass, although varied seasons. Main conclusions greatly contributes functioning, underscoring assess consequences using integrated trait‐based approaches. Our findings season‐dependent provide evidence considering factors before applying ecosystem‐based management, ecosystems.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning

Species diversity is a major determinant of ecosystem productivity, stability, invasibility, and nutrient dynamics. Hundreds of studies spanning terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems show that high-diversity mixtures are approximately twice as productive as monocultures of the same species and that this difference increases through time. These impacts of higher diversity have multiple cau...

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning: The Mystery of the Deep Sea

Experiments performed in various ecosystems have shown a near-universal, saturating relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem processes. Analyses of deep-sea ecosystems challenge this generalisation and suggest that positive species interactions might be more widespread than previously believed.

Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in dynamic landscapes.

The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) and its consequence for ecosystem services has predominantly been studied by controlled, short-term and small-scale experiments under standardized environmental conditions and constant community compositions. However, changes in biodiversity occur in real-world ecosystems with varying environments and a dynamic community comp...

Long-Term and Large-Scale Perspectives on the Relationship between Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning

E have historically been interested in the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Widespread loss of diversity caused by anthropogenic forces has heightened this interest and fostered a desire to determine the mechanisms underlying these relationships. Species diversity is expected to affect ecosystem processes, because the number and kinds of species present determine the...
